Ken,

At the risk of being repetitive it sounds like it's bolting right in ~x(

It does look like you are overcoming the gnats, though...

Thanks for the "support" I think. Yes it is all part of it. This block was given to me already prepped so I was a little disconnected (at least that is the story I'm sticking to). I have to assume it is an early 400 block as the starter didn't have 2 mounting sets and now the lower holes. But it is only a thing and things go better with Coke.(and Bourbon)

Here it the solution that I came up with for my drilling jig.

That's a level tapped to the handle. And a 90 deg magnet for the side to side.

Here's another long winded follow up on the mounting holes.

The drilling went well (didn't strike water or break off a tap). The mounting bkt needed a little filing to get the holes lined up but that went well also.
However as one thing changes so does another. The boss for the holes is a large area to choose where to drill. I gave it best guess and went for it. The end result was maybe an 1/8" to the outside on the top hole and the lower might be a little to the inside. When the length of the Alt bkt is factored in to the job things moved about a 1/4" to 5/16" toward the frame rail that I only had about a 1/4" clearance before. See pictures.

I do have a fix, but it means finding a piece of 1/4" aluminum plate and lots more power tools. The good side is that this will now give me lots of clearance to the frame. And I will need to try to find another longer belt....that makes 3 now in the "spares" box.

A follow up on my alternator adjustments.
Lowes did not have any wide 1/4" aluminum plate so I had to go with a 1" piece. This added an additional challenge.

So I used some of my years of watching "The Woodwright Shop" on PBS. The shows on forging in the blacksmith shop paid off.
All is well now and the alternator is in place with its new belt.
