Daytona Short Course TE (track event)

Post by mooreken »

Bob and I went to the SCCA School day on the short course at Daytona. While a little warm it was a nice day with a breeze. When I went to the sign in window to check in, Tim Reardon (the chief big dog for our area) came over and informed me that I had signed in as a novice, this would have meant that I would need an instructor, he said that with the days I’ve been on the big track I am now considered Solo. WooHoo (I think having the only Cobra out there sorta stood out. (And not crashing probably helped..lol)

As I have no intentions of doing competition I had not bothered with the Log Book up until this trip. I’m keeping the log going from now on and might even be able to get my previous PDX days added. I think it is a good idea as if the folks at the track are different than the regular officials it will help in getting on track.

I’m posting the videos from my GoPro knockoff for the first and third session. I don’t know how to edit them yet so each will cost you 20mins of your life you won’t get back. The hollow roll bar is picking up a lot of transmission noise, in real time I can't hear the transmission whine.

There is no data, maybe next time after I spend $10 bucks on the software upgrade for external camera.
The Speedo is the gauge on the left, 12 o’clock is 80mph, 1 o’clock is 100 and 2 o’clock is 120.

The first round I was conservative and only used 2nd and 3rd gears. In the next two rounds I started shifting into 4th and also stayed in 3rd thru several of the sharper corners.
At the 12:40 mark in session 3 the white car runs over someone’s splitter and it flips up right in front of me. Trust me when I say that the video does not tell the story of how close I came to losing it when I took evasive action. I was right at 100mph when I dodged it. :-o
As always if you don't watch the videos on full screen click the little gear in the lower right and pick 720HD for a better picture.

The link below is video from my iPhone, it’s still shaky but it has the data of speed, gForce, and lap times. It shows two back to back laps with the same lap time to the hundredth of a second.

Thanks goes out to Bob Slawson, he has a lot of track time experience and made a great Pit Crew. Everything from checking tire temps to having a cold drink ready when I came off the track.

Ken,

Good stuff! Makes me wish I'd been there.

Any idea when the next one is?
