Cam, timing chain and valve train all back in place. All gasket surfaces have been cleaned, and now mocking up the timing cover and WP on the motor to make sure how it all goes together once I’m ready to do the final install. Ford’s timing chain and water pump design is convoluted and leak prone if not done correctly, so I want to get it right…🤔

Received my shiny new Aviaid oil pan today, so I’ll be ready to proceed with the final button up of the short block…😎

Mike,

Another work of art in progress!

Let me know if I can help when a 2-man job appears.

Thx guys, I’ll be very happy if I get it all back together with no leaks or other issues…😉

So, here’s something that really makes me scratch my head. The new standard rotation pump that I bought to replace what I thought was a reverse rotation pump is no different than what I have. But here’s the funny thing, it comes with the same gasket that identifies as a reverse rotation application on line. This is what I hate about Ford stuff…😡

Wow! Who'da thunk? They certainly look identical.

Are both pumps reverse rotation?

Here's a link to 351 timing covers. Looks like the one you have is for standard rotation: https://fordification.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53582

Here's another article that has more about timing cover and water pump differences: https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/pit-s ... terchange/

I got dizzy after looking at these - hopefully they can make sense to you!

They are both apparently standard rotation. The one I bought is part number M-8501-E351S, which is standard rotation short pump, and they are identical except that the one I had is identified with PH-589 in the casting. No other differences that I can see. Guess I will return it and buy the reverse rotation gasket, and then figure out the correct pulley and bracket situation…😏

My timing cover is good, as verified by cast in part number.

Btw, I’d already reviewed that MT article, and it really didn’t cover all scenarios…🤨

I received my new CVF WP pulley, it’s smaller in diameter than the Roush pulley by 3/4”, but it’s the same diameter as the Roush crank pulley.

Still haven’t received the oddball gasket that I could only find on eBay, so I still can’t finalize the install…🤨

Once I get the timing cover, pump and balancer reinstalled, I can determine if the Roush crank pulley is workable, if not, I’ll buy the CVF pulley that I know is the correct one.

Gee, this is fun…🤔

Mike,

Ah, yess!

When the pile of "doesn't fit" is much bigger than the pile of "does fit" then you know you're getting somewhere
