dead in ohio

Post by pops »

I going to Ohio next week to get my car. Its hasnt been cranked in two years. I know I need to remove all the gas and change the oil and filters.
should i remove all the spark plugs and put oil in the cylinders then turn it over by hand. Any input is appreciated. Thanks Robret

Robert,

Voice from the past! Hope you'll go driving with us when you get back.

Not my forte; no suggestions here...

It would be good I think to limit the oil directly in the cylinders (if indeed you do that) to only a few drops. You don't want a lot in there - at least less than the amount that would lock up the engine. Maybe a small squirt of Marvel Mystery Oil or the modern equivalent.

Good luck getting it going. Maybe someone else will chime in (Mike? Ken?).

While putting a squirt of oil in the Cyls. is not a bad thing I don't think it is necessary unless the plugs are really easy to get to. If you do decide to do the oil in the cyls. along with a squirt of WD40, let is sit a while, no need to turn it over by hand just leave the plugs out and use the starter, then I would put new plugs in it just because you are there.

Gettings the gas out of the tank is a good thing. More importantly I would pull the carb bowls and clean. With the alcohol the bowls are always vulnerable to corrosion and a stuck needle. (this is for all carbs but especially Holleys). If you have not taken off the fuel bowls before and covered with a light film of grease, I would get new gaskets as the ones on the bowls will most likely self-destruct on removal.

If there is a fuel filter I would change that too....maybe twice. Once at first and one after a drive around the block a time or two...Depends on what you find after the test drive.

What you listed to do is good. My brother and I started the Triumph that we restored after it had sat for about 15+yrs doing these things and of course Points and such...It is a good feeling to bring one back to life after a long sit.
